Chabad Richmond is offering a four-week class that explores the principles of ownership in Jewish law.
The series will be presented via Zoom on four Tuesdays: Jan. 12, 19, 26 and Feb. 2 from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
The first lesson is called “The Acquisition Process,” and introduces students to the principles of “kinyan,” the acquisition process required for all transfer of ownership, including sales and gifts, real estate properties or movable objects. The second lesson focuses on monetary ownership, exploring two perspectives on the Talmudic definition of ownership.
Shared ownership is the third lesson, which will introduce students to this more complex type of ownership and analyze the approaches to partnership. And the final lesson “Shylock and the Merchant of Venice” will analyze the difference between monetary vs. physical ownership. This new perspective will help revisit the deal made between Shylock and Antonio in Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice in a whole new light.
